Nutcracker Throughout the world, The Nutcracker Ballet has become a special holiday event for generations of children. The Nutcracker and The King of Mice was written by the German writer E.T.A. Hoffman and published in 1816. Russian choreographer Marius Petipa choreographed The Nutcracker from a musical score commissioned from Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1892. Beginnings: the first 100 years of Tacoma’s neighborhoods, takes us on a journey into our city’s past and tells the early story of the people and events which shaped the community we see today. Using resources of the vast photo collections of the Tacoma Public Library and the words of local historians, Beginnings shows how Tacoma evolved and grew from a collection of 19th Century farming and logging communities to a modern industrial city almost overnight.

In the spring of 1890 the City of Tacoma was a classic example of a western boom town. Here was born the dream to construct a grand hotel on a bluff over looking Commencement Bay. A world class hotel that would rival all others. It was a dream that was not meant to be…
Out of the ruble of this dream arose another. A dream that would result in a High School so unique and beautiful it would take on a life of its own and itself become fertile ground for the dreams of many generations of Tacoma students.

International Festival of Music (2006)
The 2006 International Music Festival brought youth musicians from Tacoma ’s sister cities to Tacoma to perform in concert with youth from the Tacoma Youth Symphony. Musicians from six Tacoma sister cities including Kitakyushu, Japan; Fuzhou, China; Gunsan, Korea; Taichung, Taiwan; Aalesund, Norway and George, South Africa participated. Hear why music is truly the International Language as these accomplished musician perform some of the most beautiful compositions ever written.
