Sustainable Tacoma Commission Appointed by City Council

City Council Establishes Office of Sustainability, Sustainable Tacoma Commission
A resolution creating an Office of Sustainability and the Sustainable Tacoma Commission on Climate Change was adopted by the Tacoma City Council on October 21, 2008. The duties assigned to these entities officially begin implementation of the recommendations of the Green Ribbon Climate Action Task Force.

Tacoma's Climate Action Plan Presented to City Council
The Green Ribbon Climate Action Task Force presented its recommendations for Tacoma's Climate Action Plan to the City Council Study Session on July 1, 2008. The Council will consider formal action on the recommendations at a later date.

The Climate Action Plan lays out a road map for how the city should reduce its carbon emissions. It includes carbon reduction goals for 2012, 2020 and 2050; 40 new strategies for reducing emissions; an overview of other carbon-reduction strategies currently in progress; a recommended approach to implementation; and a two-year action plan for launching the program.

Background
Members of the City Council approved a resolution April 18, 2006, that affirmed the City's efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and curb global warming in accordance with the Kyoto Protocols. City staff are currently working to establish baseline data and develop goals for the reduction of greenhouse gases, while encouraging the continued growth and development of clean technology businesses in Tacoma. Green Ribbon Climate Action Task Force
The Green Ribbon Climate Action Task Force was established to refine reduction goals and develop specific community and government greenhouse gas reduction measures by June 2008.
To meet the Kyoto goal locally the Mayor appointed the Climate Action Task Force on Climate Protection. The 25 members of the task force were appointed by the Tacoma City Council and will represent a diverse set of interests and community groups including government agencies, environmental groups, business and trade groups, higher education and the health community. The task force will report their findings first to the Environment and Public Works Committee and then the full City Council. It is hoped that staff resources and preliminary budgetary scoping will accompany the recommendations.

Energy Supply & Use: explores heating, cooling, industry, lighting, green building
Transportation: explores transit, vehicle fuels, facilities, non-motorized transportation
Build & Unbuilt Environment: explores low-impact development, land use, open space, urban forest, sequestration, solid waste
