Members of the City Council are scheduled Feb. 9 to receive an update on the developer-initiated process, which was created to be a more transparent process resulting in the highest quality market-rate projects for city-owned property. As a second item on the agenda, Council is scheduled to receive a quarterly report from the finance director on City purchases between $50,000 and $200,000. The Council will not take public comment during the noon study session in the Tacoma Municipal Building North, 733 Market St., Room 16. City Council is scheduled Feb. 9 to consider a resolution that would authorize a revised Third Amendment to the Harold E. LeMay Museum Option and Development Agreements. As the building design has continued to evolve and the needs of the project have changed, modifications to the agreements are necessary.
On Feb. 9 the City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on a proposed amendment to the Land Use Regulatory Code regarding the use of Development Regulation Agreements that would authorize an alternative project review process for large projects or historic preservation projects of any size in the downtown area, and institutional projects on sites over five acres anywhere in the city, pursuant to the Washington State Growth Management Act. The hearing will start at approximately 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, first floor, Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market St.
The next session of the Government Leadership Institute held at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 8 will focus on human capital development in Tacoma. John Tye with Goodwill Industries and Dorothy Jeffries Anderson, Director/CEO of the Tacoma Urban League, will lead the discussion which will focus on how local residents can develop the job readiness skills needed to access and compete for jobs associated with the City’s economic development visions. The free session will be held at the Keystone Building in the Carwein Auditorium, 1900 Commerce St., on the University of Washington Tacoma campus. The Government Leadership Institute is a cooperative effort between the City of Tacoma’s Neighborhood Council Office and the University of Washington Tacoma’s Urban Studies Program.

On Feb. 1, 2010, re-cabling work on the Murray Morgan Bridge will begin and the bridge will be closed to pedestrians. The City of Tacoma’s Neighborhood Council Office, in cooperation with the University of Washington Tacoma’s (UWT) Urban Studies Program, is offering six free public sessions of the Government Leadership Institute on Mondays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the UWT campus, Keystone Building Auditorium, 1900 Commerce St. The purpose of the sessions is to provide an opportunity for the general public and students to share the same classroom, and educate and inform both about the impacts of various municipal entities on the development of the city, and the relationship of other agencies and organizations. The first session of the Government Leadership Institute will be at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 25 and will focus on regional competition, coordination and cooperation. No registration is required.
