Tacoma operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The City Council consists of an elected Mayor and eight elected Council Members (from five Councilmanic districts and three at-large). All serve four-year terms.
Council duties include adopting and amending City laws, approving the budget, establishing City policies and standards, approving contracts and agreements, appointing citizens to boards, committees and commissions, and representing the City.
The Council appoints the City Manager to administer the City's day-to-day operations. The City Manager works with the City departments to carry out the policies adopted by the City Council.
The Council meets every Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, first floor, Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market Street, Tacoma, Washington. Five Council Members make up a quorum to conduct business.
The City of Tacoma is recognized as a livable and progressive international city, regarded for the richness of its multi-cultural population and its natural setting.
