STADIUM WAY ARTERIAL PROJECT

Streetlight Update

Beginning the week of Jan. 21, the contractor will begin installing underground utilities on Stadium Way. This work will eliminate the streetlights from the contractor’s yard (north of S. 4th Street) to Division Avenue. The streetlights will be replaced with temporary lighting powered by whisperwatt/quiet generators that will be placed on the east side of the road/edge of slope. The drive lane between Division Avenue and S. 4th St. will be further delineated with orange construction barrels with blinking lights on top. The streetlights from the contractor’s yard south to I-705 will temporarily remain operational.

New Detour In-Place

Although drivers may still use St. Helens Ave. to leave the Stadium Business District, a newly signed Alternate Route to I-705 via Tacoma Ave. S. and S. 13th St. is now available (follow the red arrows on the detour plan).

S. 9th St. has been removed from original detour route. If St. Helens Ave. is used, drivers are encouraged to continue south on Market St. until reaching S. 13th St., where the route turns left and merges with the new Alternate Route to I-705 (follow blue arrows on the detour plan).

From I-705

Although the Stadium Way ramp from I-705 remains open and continues to connect to Commerce St., another option to enter downtown is the City Center Exit. Following this exit, turn left on S. 15th St., and turn right onto Market St., where the route connects to the original detour using St. Helens Ave. to reach the Stadium Business District (follow the green arrows on the detour plan).

Please note, although detours are in place, all businesses remain open.

Stadium Way Arterial Improvement Project enters Phase II

Phase II of the Stadium Way Arterial Improvement project has begun. Stadium Way is now closed to vehicles and pedestrians from Interstate-705 to Division Avenue. The current detour route between the Stadium business area and downtown Tacoma is via Commerce Street, South 9th Street, Market Street and St. Helens Avenue.

The detour route will remain in place through August 2013. Local and emergency access to the Stadium Way businesses and residents is currently via South 4th Street. The point of local access may change over the life of the project; those affected by the changes will be notified in advance.

Scope of Work

The Stadium Way Arterial project includes removal of the existing pavement, upgrades to street lighting, new sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and other utilities, new pavement, retaining walls, handrails and sidewalks with improvements to Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility, a traffic signal at North 4th Street, bike lanes, landscaping and other Complete Streets concepts.

June 4 - 18: Site Prep Work (signage, erosion control, etc.)

June 25 - Early October: Phase 1B (N. 1st St., Tacoma to Division, and Commerce Street, So. 9th to just north of I-705. During the work N. 1st St. will be closed, Commerce Street will have one lane open southbound at all times)

October 2012- September 2013: Phase 2 (Stadium Way from Division to north of I-705, including Division to Broadway, will be closed)

Tentatively, Spring 2013 – September 2013 : Begin Phase 1A (Schuster Parkway southbound will be closed between 9am-9pm, anticipated 3-6 month duration)
