Fire Communications Center

The Tacoma Fire Department operates its own Communications Center.  We receive calls for assistance and dispatch the required units and personnel.  The Tacoma Fire Department receives calls via the 911 system, our municipal box system, which is tied to the major buildings, schools, and hospitals, as well as from private alarm companies.  The Tacoma Fire Communications Center (FCC) dispatches approximately 40,000 calls for service each year.Fire Communications

FCC is staffed with 17 uniformed Tacoma Fire Department personnel.  All Tacoma Fire Dispatchers are certified as Emergency Medical Technicians and maintain the same Fire Operations training as their counterparts in the field.  Their experience and knowledge as firefighters helps them to more efficiently dispatch the proper resources to emergency incidents.

At this time our Fire Communications Center is undergoing a major renovation.  The last phase is scheduled to be completed this year.  Some of the highlights of this last phase of remodeling include:

  • new Computer Aided Dispatching hardware and software.
  • new 800 Megahertz voice radio system.
  • new telephone system with power mapping.
  • city network computer at each console.
  • upgrade of the Zetron alerting equipment.

All of this powered by a new 800 AMP electrical system with UPS and redundant back up electrical generators.

The Tacoma Fire Communications Center has proudly served the citizens of our service area and the members of the Tacoma Fire department for more than 100 years and we are well on the way to providing another 100 years of top quality service.
