The Tacoma Fire Department protects a service area of 71 square miles (Cities of Tacoma, Fife and Fircrest) and a population of approximately 220,730. The department also services the Port of Tacoma, which is the sixth largest container port in North America and covers over 2,400 acres.
The Tacoma Fire Department has 16 active fire station distributed throughout the City, including the Port area. Each station has one engine. Four stations also have ladder companies and five stations have Advanced Life Support (ALS) medic units. In addition, Station 18 is used for fireboat moorage and maintenance, and unstaffed Stations 5 and 12 are used for office space and storage. TFD staffing consists of approximately 400 uniformed personnel and 32 civilians. The majority of the uniformed force is engaged in fire suppression and emergency medical service delivery.
In order to help our firefighters fulfill our life saving mission, two major work-groups keep the department operating at peak performance.
The garage is responsible for repair and maintenance work on all Tacoma Fire Department ladder trucks, engines, medic units, fireboats and light duty vehicles. Additionally all small tools and small equipment are maintained by fire garage personnel. Fire Garage personnel are also responsible for ordering, stocking and delivering supplies to all Tacoma Fire Department facilities via a daily messenger service.
The Tacoma Fire Department Information Services group consists of three Computer Systems Programmers and three Application Development Systems Programmers. Information Services (IS) personnel support a variety of systems and hardware including Dispatch Systems, Database, E-mail and Web Servers. Customized applications have been developed for Scheduling, Reporting, Building Inspections and Training. Several mapping applications used by Dispatch and Administrative Decision Analysis are maintained. Over 200 computer workstations, laptops and printers are also supported.
