Beginnings: The first 100 years of Tacoma’s Neighborhoods

Beginnings: the first 100 years of Tacoma’s neighborhoods, takes us on a journey into our city’s past and tells the early story of the people and events which shaped the community we see today. Using resources of the vast photo collections of the Tacoma Public Library and the words of local historians, Beginnings shows how Tacoma evolved and grew from a collection of 19th Century farming and logging communities to a modern industrial city almost overnight.

The Castle on the Hill: 100 Years of Stadium High School

In the spring of 1890 the City of Tacoma was a classic example of a western boom town.  Here was born the dream to construct a grand hotel on a bluff over looking Commencement Bay.  A world class hotel that would rival all others.  It was a dream that was not meant to be…

Out of the ruble of this dream arose another.  A dream that would result in a High School so unique and beautiful it would take on a life of its own and itself become fertile ground for the dreams of many generations of Tacoma students.
