EnviroHouse exhibit showcases art created with recycled objects

Plastic bags, wooden boat parts, book covers, bottle caps and candy wrappers are just some of the items you’ll see incorporated into professional works of art featured now through September at the EnviroHouse, the City of Tacoma’s green building exhibit at the Tacoma Landfill.

This inaugural EnviroHouse art exhibit showcases work from five local artists who have transformed existing or “found” objects into more than 20 pieces of art, including hats, clocks, drawer pulls, magnets, paintings, wall art and more.

“Marrying art and the environment combines a creative and sustainable approach for reusing and displaying everyday objects that are typically disposed as garbage,” said Bill Smith, environmental specialist with the City of Tacoma. “I’m hopeful those who visit the EnviroHouse will gain a new appreciation for recycled-content art as a legitimate art form, and become inspired to find innovative ways to recycle and reuse at home.”

Featured artists are Barbara De Pirro, George Kurzman, Diane Kurzyna, Ruby the Resourceress and Holly Senn. Meet the artists and learn about their environmental inspiration at the artists’ reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on June 21 at the EnviroHouse (located at the Tacoma Landfill), 3510 S. Mullen St.

The EnviroHouse art exhibit rotates on a quarterly basis and continually seeks applications from artists with recycled-content artwork. For more information about the art exhibit and the EnviroHouse, visit www.cityoftacoma.org/EnviroHouse, or call (253) 573-2426.
