No garbage or recycling service Christmas Day and New Year's Day
City of Tacoma administrative offices will close Christmas Day and New Year's Day, so garbage, recycling and yard waste pickup will be one day late during both of those weeks. For example, Monday's pickup day moves to Tuesday and Tuesday's pickup moves to Wednesday and so on for the remainder of each week. The City of Tacoma's landfill, recycling center and household hazardous waste facility will close at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve and be closed all day on both Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Still time to donate to animals in need
Donations are needed to help improve shelter conditions for homeless companion animals in transition. Collection barrels in the County-City Building first and second-floor lobbies still have plenty of room for donations of dry food, blankets, towels, beds, sweaters, litter boxes, mops, hoses and other items. Proceeds from this animal welfare program benefit the City of Tacoma's Animal Care and Control, Pierce County's Animal Care and Control and The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County. The collection effort continues through Dec. 29 – this is part of the Happy Howlidays community campaign being conducted by the Dugan Foundation. Donations can be made during regular business hours at Krei Architecture, 7 N. Tacoma Ave. (253) 572-9274; Jones Animal Hospital, 3322 S. Union Ave. (253) 383-2616; Pet Market, 4618 S.W. 320th St., Federal Way (253) 661-9100; and Urban Dogs, 1717 Dock St. (253) 573-1717.

Tacoma residents may recycle Christmas trees free
City of Tacoma Solid Waste Management will pick up undecorated and unflocked Christmas trees from residential garbage customers at no additional charge. Tacoma apartments and businesses may dispose of undecorated and unflocked trees free by bringing them to the City of Tacoma Landfill. Drop trees off at the education turnout area, just before the Recycling Center. Apartment managers or landlords who collect tenants' trees may drop them off all at once for free, but are encouraged to call (253) 591-5543 in advance. Tree lot operators and nonprofit groups must pay for disposal. The Tacoma Landfill, 3510 S. Mullen St., will accept trees from Dec. 26 to Jan. 21. Trees may be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. every day except New Year's Day when the landfill is closed. Trees must be free of tinsel, ornaments, flocking and stands.
Solid Waste Management will pick up trees on Tacoma residential garbage customers' regular yard waste collection day until Jan. 19, 2007. If a tree will not fit inside the yard waste container, cut the tree into lengths no longer than 3 feet, bundle with heavy twine and place next to yard waste containers. Trees left next to containers will be collected separately from container contents. Decorated or flocked trees cannot be recycled and must go in the garbage. Customers with questions about Christmas tree recycling may call (253) 591-5543.
