Haul garbage to the Tacoma Landfill

Accepted / not accepted garbage items at the landfill
Before throwing something in the garbage pile destined for the landfill, see if it can be recycled, reused, repaired, composted or donated.

Here are lists of the most common items accepted and not accepted as garbage at the Tacoma Landfill. If you have a question about something not listed, e-mail solidwaste@cityoftacoma.org, or call (253) 591-5543.

Accepted

  • Aluminum foil & trays (dirty)
  • Ashes & charcoal briquettes (cold)
  • Automotive oil/fluid containers (empty)
  • Cardboard (dirty, food contaminated)
  • Caps & lids (plastic & metal)
  • Car seats (special fee applies)
  • Cat litter
  • Cement bags (empty)
  • Cigarette butts
  • Clothing and fabrics (stained, non-reusable)
  • Construction and demolition debris (no larger than 4 feet by 8 feet)
  • Disposable diapers
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Foam rubber
  • Food waste
  • Hypodermic needles or syringes (sealed inside rigid container)
  •  Lumber (no longer than 8 feet in length)
  • Paper plates and cups (dirty)
  • Pet food bags
  • Pet manure (securely bagged)
  • Pizza boxes
  • Plastic food wrap, sandwich & produce bags
  • Styrofoam products
    Recycle packing peanuts at the Recycling Center or at most mail service stores
  • Tires (special fee applies)
  • Tissues, toilet paper, paper towels, napkins
  •  Toys (broken)
  • Wood (with a cross-section 6 inches by 6 inches or larger must be cut to 4-foot lengths)
  • Woven plastic bags (sand & feed bags, etc.)

Not accepted

  • Asbestos
    Learn ways to safely handle and dispose of asbestos
  • Toxic, hazardous or dangerous materials or wastes (oil-based paints, household cleaners, solvents, auto products, flammable liquids, etc.).
  • Hypodermic needles or syringes (without container). Find out how to properly dispose.
  • Car, truck or motorcycle parts (tires and car seats accepted for a special fee)

  • Liquids
  • Medical waste
  • Used motor oil
    Recycle motor oil at the Recycling Center or at select auto supply stores


Landfill disposal fees – Garbage 2009
The fee to dispose of garbage at the Tacoma Landfill varies, depending on the weight of your load and whether you are a City of Tacoma residential solid waste customer, business customer or non-City of Tacoma customer.

Additional fees also may apply to customers who bring in waste material requiring special handling, such as asbestos, appliances, tires, car seats and furniture. Get a complete list of landfill fees.

Garbage disposal fees - 2008 & 2009

 Each additional 100-lb increment

* All fees are per load. Fractions of 100 pounds are billed to the next 100-pound increment.

To qualify for the City of Tacoma residential landfill disposal fee, you must meet the residency requirements and bring proof of your residency  when you visit the Tacoma Landfill.

8 a.m.-6 p.m., every day
(Closed: New Year’s Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day)

Directions

  • From I-5: Take Exit 132 and merge onto SR-16. Take Exit 1C Fircrest/Center Street. Go straight at the traffic light onto South Mullen Street. Follow Mullen Street until you reach the landfill.
  • From Orchard Street: Turn onto South Center Street going east. Turn right onto South Mullen Street and follow the road until you reach the landfill.
