This November will mark the fifth anniversary of Art at Work month, which will include a Community Celebration of the Arts, Studio Tours, an Arts Symposium, a Slide Slam and Project-a-Thon, and Buy an Artist Coffee day. These are art connections you won’t want to miss, and they’re all free and open to the public.
The goal of Art at Work month is to illustrate the collective talent in Tacoma and get people involved in the arts, and it’s an opportunity for all community members to be an active part of Tacoma's cultural life. Information on all of the following events is available at www.tacomaculture.org/arts/home.asp.
This year’s kickoff Community Celebration of the Arts will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 1 at the Tacoma Art Museum and it will be an opportunity to mix with the arts community against a backdrop of hors d'oeuvres, drinks, music and an awards celebration.
Studio Tours will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 11 and 12 amongst 36 artists, 23 studios and five schools. Those who participate in this event can visit with artists at work in their studios, see how art is created and purchase one-of-a-kind items.
A new Art at Work event is the Slide Slam and Project-A-Thon taking place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 17 at the Rialto Theater, 301 S. 9th St. In a fast-paced format, a selection of work by local artists will be projected while an accompanying description of their work and contact information will be included in the program. Artists of all mediums and genres will show their work alongside one another. All artists are currently being encouraged to submit their work for the slam.
Another new event is the Arts Symposium from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 and 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 19 at the Tacoma School of the Arts, 1117 Broadway Ave. These information sessions and discussions are geared toward artists and arts organizations. Topics include art world survival skills, copyrights, grant writing, creating Web sites, the business of art and starting non-profit organizations. Pre-registration is required.
Lastly, Buy an Artist Coffee day will take place all day on Nov. 21. Invite an artist for a cup of joe and enjoy the array of specials being offered by seven of Tacoma's local coffee houses.
