Community Based Services Expansion Update
While the existing CBS areas are moving forward with the community improvement priorities they’ve set in partnership with the City of Tacoma, the CBS program is pushing onward in rolling out the newest CBS area within the Eastside and South End of Tacoma.
September will be an important month for the newest area and the community members within it.
On Sept. 13, the City will host a community training session with John Campbell, a renowned community activist. This one-day seminar will focus on responsible citizenship, stopping the cycle of fear, and learning how to take back your neighborhood. It’s open to community members within the five CBS areas, and other Tacoma residents on a space-available basis.
If you’re interested in attending this helpful seminar, please contact Mary Beth Riggs at (253) 591-5160 or mriggs@cityoftacoma.org. The registration deadline for the seminar is 5 p.m. on Sept. 5.
Following this training session, the CBS team and several City of Tacoma leaders will host a priority setting session at 7 p.m. on Sept. 22 at Lincoln High School Auditorium, 701 S. 37th St.
The CBS program has sent a direct-mail survey to the 5,000 residents in this new CBS area, seeking their input on how to best eliminate blight and fight crime in their geography. This direct-mail piece also included an invitation to the priority setting meeting.
The survey data is currently being compiled and will be presented at the priority setting meeting on Sept. 22. The community members who attend the Sept. 22 gathering will be asked to vote for their top priorities from the survey feedback, which will set the over-arching goals for this area.
The City of Tacoma sincerely hopes to attract as many community members in the new CBS area to participate in the priority setting as possible.
Also, to hear an update on CBS overall from Lisa Wojtanowicz, CBS program manager, attend the Tacoma City Council Study Session at noon on Sept. 9 in Tacoma Municipal Building North, 733 Market St., Room 16. Audio replays will be available online after the Study Session though TV Tacoma’s Web site or through Click! Network’s Video on Demand services. For more information, visit www.tvtacoma.com.
