Project Updates
Broadway LID Vaulted Walk Work Update
The final phase of the vaulted sidewalk work is now underway along Broadway. The contractor (R. L. Alia Construction) is currently working on the structural walk in front of the Mecca Building. The contractor will also complete the improvements on the eastside of Broadway between South 7th and 9th streets. These improvements include new curb and gutter, driveway approaches, parking, planter areas, street lighting and street trees.
Pedestrian access will be maintained, however the parking stalls adjacent to the project will be blocked temporarily for the work. This phase is scheduled to be complete in October.
Work on St. Helens is expected to wrap up by the end of July
Phase two of the structural walk construction along St. Helens will be wrapping up soon. The structural walk portion of the work is complete; the contractor (R. L. Alia Construction) is now working on waterproofing the layer of structural walk concrete. Once the area has been treated, a four inch layer of concrete sidewalk will be poured on top of the walk and the parking areas will then be paved.
The sidewalk work on St. Helens is expected to be complete by the end of July. Next the contractor will move on to the third phase of the project on Broadway.
Structural walk work starts on St. Helens March 16
Starting tomorrow morning, Tuesday, March 16, the contractor (R. L. Alia Construction) will begin work on the structural walk in front of Tully’s on the St. Helens side on the building. This work is preparatory work that will only affect a small portion of the sidewalk at this location. Pedestrian access will be maintained, however the parking stalls adjacent to the work will be blocked for construction equipment. This preparatory work is expected to take approximately one week to complete.
Starting the week of March 22, the sidewalk at this location will be closed to allow for structural sidewalk replacement. At this time, pedestrians will be diverted around the work, but access to all businesses and residents will be maintained.
Good news! The Market Street structural sidewalk work is nearly complete and is on track to be done by the end of March.
BLID center lines scheduled to be painted Saturday
On Saturday night, the Broadway LID contractor will be busy painting yellow center lines throughout the entire Broadway LID project. The work is expected to start after 6 p.m. and will take a couple of hours to complete. Parking will not be affected, but there may be traffic delays while driving through the area.
Market Street northbound lane will be closed one more week
The northbound lane of Market Street, from South 9th to the pedestrian crosswalk in front of the Municipal Building, will continue to be closed next week. Access to the City’s parking garage and other facilities will be maintained during this closure and southbound traffic on Market Street will not be affected. The area is scheduled to re-open to unrestricted traffic on Feb. 26. The extended closure is necessary for the contractor to complete the reconstruction of the structural sidewalk.

Special thanks to those of you who took the time to complete the BLID Communications Survey. Your feedback is appreciated.
- Explanation for back-in parking: Angled, back-in parking was designed to prevent cars who are parked in an area on a hill from rolling out into traffic - if they do not set their parking brake. Cars will not be able to roll out into the lane of traffic, but instead roll into the curb. If the parking was designed the other way - the cars would be facing down hill to the south, and could roll out of the parking stall if the parking brake was not set.
- 3 Variable Message Boards have been set up to notify the public that businesses remain open while construction is underway.
- Access to Opera Alley will be maintained
ADA Stalls
As a result of the handicap stalls that were removed on Market due to construction, the City has relocated the stalls to the West side of St. Helens. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience the removal caused and will make every effort as the project moves forward to ensure access to these parking stalls are maintained.
St. Helens Avenue has been redirected to one-way southbound
St. Helens Avenue has been redirected to one-way southbound into downtown Tacoma. This is the first step to making St. Helens one-way indefinitely. This traffic flow redirect is necessary for work to continue on schedule with the BLID project.
