Downtown Charging

Expanded EV charging this summer at City downtown parking

Construction has begun on Electrification of Transportation System project (ETS) to locate 34 Electric Vehicle chargers in multiple sites that will nearly double the number of chargers available at 8 City operated parking lots to EV drivers.  When complete, 8 downtown parking lots and garages will have simultaneous capacity for 64 vehicles to charge at Level 2 (240 VAC), and 4 at Level 3 DC Fast Charging (480V).  New chargers will begin supplementing 36 existing chargers this spring with project completion projected this summer.

These City operated EV Chargers support expanding electric vehicle use in the downtown core of Tacoma by residents, visitors, businesses and their employees.  Transportation electrification is a key carbon and air pollution reduction strategy within the Tacoma 2030 Climate Action Plan goals.

This ETS Downtown Parking project is funded primarily through a grant awarded by the WA Commerce Clean Energy Fund. City’s Sustainability Office and Tacoma Power collaboratively developed scope and obtaining of the grant.  Tacoma Power is the project manager working in partnership with Public Works Parking and Tacoma Venue Events who operate the fee-based parking lots.
